About Webster
Webster was first settled in 1855. The first known settler was Martin Taylor, a native of Ireland, whe made a claim to land in section 21. After constructing a small log shack he sent for his family that he had left in Hastings while we was getting started.
Another early settler of the township was Harry Humprey who built a log house and ran it as a hotel until 1870s. In December came brothers S.J. and Chalmar Webster, who remained on their claims until 1866 when they moved to Marshall. The name for the township was given in honor of the father of the Webster brothers. The elder Webster also came to the township and farmed the land until his death in 1880.
Webster Township was originally named Minnemada by the surveyors. This was changed by the locals to Carroiltown, but later the County Commissioners officially named it Webster. The township was formally organized after Minnesota achieved statehood in 1858.
